The best way to identify and record your computer’s hardware
and software data including the product keys for various programs is by
installing and running a system profile program. I use Belarc Advisor which is freely
available on the Internet. It
creates a profile of your entire system within minutes. I am sure that there are other comparable programs out there and you should feel free to use them.
This step is very critical, and will help you immensely if
you need to rebuild your system from scratch, after a major crash. Without this profile or its neatly organized
data, you will spend countless hours of searching through the Internet and old
manuals. And that too, may not be
sufficient because without the product keys, you may need to purchase your
favorite programs all over again.
